Obituary of Marietta Christon Smith

Marietta Christon Smith passed away peacefully Sunday April 9, 2023 at the age of 78 at her home in Sahuarita, Arizona.

Marietta was born December 27, 1944 in the Bronx, New York, to Effie Georgiades and Peter Christon. Marietta graduated from New Hyde Park Memorial High School in 1962 with a specialty in stenography. Marietta married her beloved husband, Garrett Anthony Smith, April 30, 1966.

Marietta and Garrett lived in New York, Connecticut, California and Hawaii pursuant to Garrett’s career in submarines with the United States Navy. Marietta took care of their home and children during her husband’s deployments and became a head secretary to a New York State Supreme Court judge for many years before retiring.

In retirement, Marietta and Garrett enjoyed traveling the country in their RV before settling down in Arizona. Marietta loved spending time with her family whether it be over a delicious meal, playing a game filled with laughter or enjoying conversation while on vacation. Marietta was a valued volunteer at the Animal League of Green Valley, the American Legion Post 66 and the Sahuarita Food Bank.

She spent countless hours taking care of animals and she opened her home to foster dogs, cats and birds.

Marietta was predeceased by her husband, Garrett Anthony Smith, and is survived by their children, Garrett Anthony Smith, Jr. and his wife Melanie, Mary Elizabeth McGraw and her husband Daniel and Christon Elizabeth Ball and her husband Jonathan; their grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Andria, Megan, Alexandra, Shea, Madeline, Alisanne, Violet and Abel; their great grandchild, Lincoln; her brother Anthony and his wife Connie; and her sister Libby.

Marietta will be laid to rest with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery. In honor of Marietta, donations can be made to the Animal League of Green Valley, the Sahuarita Food Bank or the Gary Sinise Foundation
