Obituary of Jere Charles West

Jeré Charles West 7/24/1932 - 2/7/2016 Jeré Charles West (83) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, July 24, 1932 to Raymond Porter and Nellie Grondsma West. He attended school there and proudly joined the U.S. Navy in 1950 during the Korean conflict, where he served four years and was discharged with the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer. He served aboard the US Navy hospital ship the "USS Haven" as a Hospital Corpsman. He was always very proud of his country and his service. He met Patsy Arline Greene in 1954. She was a senior still in high school; they were wed April 7, 1955. Jeré attended the University of Utah. He achieved his solo pilot's license and loved flying, one of many achievements. He apprenticed as a meat cutter for Grand Central Food Stores; managed the Shopper's Discount Stores and Allied Supermarkets. It was with Allied Foods, that Jeré accepted a transfer to Tucson, AZ, as a store manager; and found himself and his family leaving Salt Lake City in a bitter storm in the middle of December 1971. In 1977 Jeré changed careers and joined the Shamrock Foods Family. He would retire from Shamrock Dairy after 17 years of service as Sales Manager. A man of not many words, Jeré was probably best known for his dry wit and quick one-liners. In his early years in Utah, Jeré enjoyed the outdoors and spent many wonderful weekend's deer hunting with friends and family or fishing with his boys. In Arizona, however, those passions were quickly replaced with golfing. How he loved trying to beat his last score. In 1974 Jeré and Pat bought their first RV and a new adventure presented itself. They would spend the next 30 years touring this wonderful land. He and Pat visited nearly all the lower 48, Canada, Alaska and Mexico. They also had the opportunity to enjoy three ocean cruises, The Caribbean Islands, Alaska and the Panama Canal. Preceded in death by his parents, brother, Raymond Jr. and lovely sister-in-law, Betsy. He is survived by his wife, Pat and four children, Rand (Brenda), Kirk (Maggie), Shelly (Jake) Young, Karyn (Jim) Kosur; seven wonderful grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Also surviving are his brother, Wayne of Salt Lake City and sister, Sharon (Stuart) Stout of Washington. As the proud patriarch of the West family, Jeré was a dedicated, loyal, and loving father to his children and a proud patriot of his country. It was Jere's wish to be cremated and a private family service was held. Remembrances may be made to your favorite charity.
