Obituary of Mac Marshall

Mac Marshall was born in Kansas City, MO on December 2, 1925, the youngest of eight children passed away January 4, 2015. One family story said that Mac taught himself to read at age four so he could follow the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. In high school, Mac won 2nd place in a national debate contest, foreshadowing his interest in news broadcasting and politics. He proudly served in the US Navy during WWII. In the late 40s, Mac discovered Tucson, he loved the sunshine, and stayed. His family soon followed. He graduated from the U of A with a BA in History. The AZ Right to Work law was co-authored by him during his tenure as President of the Young Republican's Club of Pima County. Later, he co-owned and bartended at the popular Townhouse. Mac started his broadcasting career as a radio play-by-play announcer of high school sports. Other stints in radio included DJing and news announcing. KGUN was his next assignment. During the 60s, Mac Marshall was the news department at KGUN-9 anchor, writer, director and reporter/photographer. Initially, he was also weatherman and sportscaster. Marshall won Newscaster of the Year several times also, in the 60s, he was the radio play-by-play announcer for U of A football, basketball and baseball. Marshall's documentary on Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino won first prize in a national competition. Mac was elected Tucson constable from 1968 to 1972. Later, he sold mobile homes, owned other local restaurant/bars, and did freelance advertising. In retirement, Mac drove for SunTran for many years. Mac's lifelong passions were Republican Party politics and sports of any kind. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of a good time, and telling a long Irish yarn. Mac was pre-deceased by parents, W. Wood and Helen M. Marshall; brothers, Mansfield, Theodore, Paul, David and sisters, Sr. Mary Hildegard, Faith Anderson, and Jane Swanick; ex-wife, Bernice and wife of 49 years, Bonnie. Survivors include daughter, Ramona; sons, Wood and MacCay (Dana); granddaughter, Kate and many nieces and nephews.
