Obituary of Carl Franklin Brunenkant

Carl Franklin Brunenkant 81, died on July 28, 2014 in Tucson, Arizona of congestive heart failure. On September 19, 1932, Carl was born in Florence, Arizona, a town with origins and history that includes the Brunenkant family, comprising of Carl's parents, Alvin and Pauline, who owned the Florence General Store and Bakery and siblings, Edith, Walt, Maxine, Frieda and Larry. Carl is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Barry Brunenkant and five sons, John (Roseanne), Barry (Honor), Mark (Lucinda), Tim (Annette) and Jim; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Carl not only dedicated his life to his family, but also to education, helping guide and shape the futures of many students, athletes, and teachers. He is a member of the Pima County, Sunnyside and Salpointe Halls of Fame, was an Arizona State Athletic Director of the Year, was named Arizona Track Coach of the Year, was one of the Founders of the Tucson Marathon and a pioneer in establishing Special Olympics in Arizona. His career started at Salpointe Catholic High School in 1955. In 1957 he transferred to Sunnyside High School, where he taught biology, coached the cross country and track teams to several State Championships, and eventually an administrator. He was the first principal of Desert View High School from 1985 to 1989. After retiring from Desert View, Carl served as athletic director and principal at Salpointe Catholic High School; he finally retired "for good" after five years as athletic director at Flowing Wells High School. On Friday August 1, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., the Brunenkant family will be hosting a Visitation at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge, with the Rosary being said at 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1946 E. Lee. Because he cared so much for helping others succeed, the Brunenkants are asking their family and friends to consider donating to the Carl Brunenkant Educator Scholarship Account instead of sending flowers.
