Obituary of Anthony James Gomez

Anthony (Tony) James Gomez

September 12, 1965 – July 17, 2022

Tony  was born in Tucson to Antonio and Isabel Gomez, and grew up with his older siblings Anna and Mark. Tony married Mendy (Heggie) Gomez in December 1989 and they had two children, Talia and Adam, the lights of his life.

Tony received his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture in 1989 from the University of Arizona. He worked for private architecture firms until 2009, when he became a Civilian Employee for the United States Air Force.

As a Tucson native and UA alumnus, Tony was a passionate (rabid!) fan of the Arizona Wildcats sports – through good and bad coaches and seasons – and passed that love on  to his kids, along with his support of the Lakers, Rams and Dodgers. He was an accomplished  and fiercely competitive tennis and pickleball player and often competed in tournaments.

In September 2020, the unthinkable happened: Tony was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease),  a progressive neurodegenerative disease that breaks down nerve cells and reduces muscle function. Tony battled this disease with grace, courage, and even humor, and  is admired by all who knew him for his strength and determination. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his dearest loved ones.

Tony leaves behind countless family members, friends and pets, who so selfishly wish they had more time with this wonderful man.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Tony’s name to the ALS Association, Arizona Chapter, at http://web.alsa.org/goto/SweetTonyG.
