Betty Lockhart

Obituary of Betty Lou Lockhart

On Sunday, May 2, 2021, just one week before Mother’s Day, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Betty Lockhart, left this life at the age of 80 to be with God.

Betty was born in Dumas, Arkansas, on April 4, 1941, to Lorene Ausley and Fate Navors. Betty moved to Chicago, Illinois, in her early teens, and then to Rockford, Illinois, in her twenties. Betty moved to Tucson, Arizona, in 1982, where she resided until her passing. Betty worked for the U.S. Post Office, from which she retired after 30 years.

Betty loved God and enjoyed her bible study groups, traveling, volunteering, music, potato chips, sports—especially basketball, making blankets, giving gifts, making others laugh, and spending time with her family, as well as many lifelong friends and community neighbors. Betty was quick witted, had a great sense of humor, and was fiercely loyal. Her straight-to-the-point, honest, and caring personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Betty was small in stature but powerful in her presence, strength, and determination. She was a single mom who raised her six children primarily on her own, at times with assistance from her grandmother, and imparted all her very best to each of them. She was super proud of her children and grand/great grandchildren and was known to boast about them just a bit…She loved them all very much.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Iona Jones-Ausley, and her mother and father, and is survived by her half-brother and half-sister, Fate Navors, Jr., and Lumma Norwood, and six children, Rhonda Gordon-Oaks, Robert Gordon, Jr., Angel Gunn, Clyde Gordon, Lincoln Lockhart, and Joseph Lockhart. Betty also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on May 27, 2021, at 3:00 pm, at Grace to the Nations Church, 6180 E. Pima Street, Tucson, AZ, where both Betty and her grandmother were long-time members. A reception will be held immediately following the service to continue honoring the memory of a life well lived.
