Obituary of George L. Tolman

Rev. Dr. George L. Tolman. George Leroy Tolman was born June 5, 1921, in Watsonville, CA, died March 2, 2014. He graduated from Stanford University in 1943 and reported for training and duty in the U.S. Navy. Commissioned an Ensign, he served 20 months on an LST in the Solomon Islands, New Guinea and the Philippines. He served on a second landing craft at the close of WWII in the Marianas Islands and Japan. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1950, was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and served churches in Visalia and Orange, CA, before coming to Tucson in 1966, where he was pastor of First Christian Church until 1987. He helped organize the Tucson Ecumenical Council and in 1979 co-founded the Tucson affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. After his retirement he served 12 times as interim pastor in four western states. He and his family traveled widely in the U.S. and on five continents. He loved nature, hiking, fishing, photography and great music. He is predeceased by his parents, Dr. George P. and Effie (Seitz) Tolman. He is survived by Janet, his wife of 21 years; daughters, Jane Illades (Lalo), Debra Lyng (Patrick), and Leslie Tolman; sons, Danson (Patricia), Timothy (Maria), and Kenneth; six grandsons and one great-grandson. Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 15, 2014, 2:00 p.m., at First Christian Church, 740 East Speedway.
